Abstract:

Nano-photonic switching devices employing hybrid plasmonic waveguides (HPWG) will be discussed. The scope of the presentation will be two-fold. In brief, the first part will be deals with modeling and numerical simulations of HPWG based switching device whereas in the last part I will discuss refractive index based optical sensors for the detection of harmful alcohols and gases.

In the beginning, a three-dimensional vertical hybrid plasmonic switch based on metal-insulator-semiconductor (MIS) structure having vanadium dioxide fin Bragg grating will be discussed. To achieve frequency selective switching, effective index theory is employed to design Bragg grating based structure with narrow band switching in the near infra-red band. Moreover, the impact of various dimension tolerances on the extinction ratio  (ER) and figure of merit (FoM) of the switch will be presented. Following that, a vertical hybrid plasmonic waveguide (HPWG) modulator incorporating Au nano-rings and using phase change chalcogenide thin film (Ge2Sb2Te5, commonly known as GST) will be presented. Also, with amorphous to crystalline phase transition of GST, significant modulation depths can be achieved in the optical C-band.

In the end, I will give talk on refractive index based optical sensors working in the near infra-red (NIR) region. First, a methanol sensor in a hybrid plasmonic aperture waveguide, with gold nano-rings on the coupling plane will be discussed. From mathematical modeling, I have designed the waveguide aperture for excitation of LSPR on the gold nanorings using well-known Bethe’s theory. I will also  discuss a graphene oxide coated long-period grating fiber optic gas sensor fabricated at Fiber Grating Lab, Fiber Sensors and Optical Spectroscopy Section (FSOSS), Raja Ramanna Centre for Advanced
Technology (RRCAT), Indore.

Brief resume

Mandeep Singh is working as Assistant Professor in the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, Manipal Institute of Technology, Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), Karnataka. He obtained is doctoral degree from the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, IIT Roorkee in 2018. He received his Master’s degree in Electronics and Communication Engineering from IIT (ISM) Dhanbad in 2013 and Bachelor’s degree in Electronics and Communication Engineering from Beant College of  Engg. & Tech. (State Engg. College), Punjab in 2010.

He is recipient of prestigious INSA visiting scientist fellowship 2019 given by Indian National Science Academy, New Delhi to do advance research work in the Department of ECE, IISc Bangalore. He has contributed to BRNS project funded by RRCAT, Indore. He is also associated with “Laboratory for Green Nanophotonics, Optoelectronics, and Nanosensing”, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Maryland, College Park, MD, USA (Supervisor: Prof. Mario Dagenais). His area of research is integrated photonic waveguide based optical devices, Fiber Bragg grating (FBG) design, optical sensors and microwave photonics.
