Title: Theory, computation, and thermodynamics of nanophotonic devices

Speaker: Siddharth Buddhiraju, Ph.D. student, Stanford University

Date, Time & Venue: January 6th, 2020, 4:00 – 5:00 PM, ECE Golden Jubliee Hall

Abstract: Nanophotonics has grown to play a significant role in the development of next-generation energy, information processing, and sensing technologies. In this talk, I will present my PhD research involving the development of theoretical and computational tools to describe nanophotonic thermal phenomena involving generating power from sky access, all-optical refrigeration, near-field photovoltaics and the fundamental thermodynamic limits of these processes. Time permitting, I will also describe more recent explorations of adjoint-gradient based computational inverse-design of nanophotonic devices.

Bio: Siddharth Buddhiraju is a fifth-year PhD candidate in the group of Professor Shanhui Fan at Stanford University. His research interests span the theoretical and computational aspects of nanoscale photonics and electronics. He was the recipient of the Stanford Graduate Fellowship, the Honda Young Engineer and Scientist Award, the Narotam Seksharia Excellence Award and the OP Jindal Engineering and Management Scholarship. He graduated with a dual degree in Microelectronics from IIT Bombay in 2015.
