Mindtree, global technology services and digital transformation company, has donated an endowment to support AI Research in IISc.
The first initiative from Mindtree is to create an endowment for supporting an Associate Chair Position which will be held by an Associate Professor in the Division of EECS. The duration of the Chair is three years after which another Associate Professor will hold the Chair position.
The inaugural Mindtree Associate Professor Chair has been awarded to Professor Vijay Natarajan, Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Automation. Prof. Natarajan has an experience of 12 years and works in the areas of scientific visualization, computational topology, and computational geometry. The main topics of research include topological methods for visualization; multiscale representation of large scale scientific data; geometric and topological simplification; and applications of visualization in life sciences, climate science, and material science. Prof. Natarajan’s research is set to impact next-generation data processing, analysis and visualization technology in the large.

The Division of EECS launched the first ever M.Tech. Programme in Artificial Intelligence in August 2019 with a batch of 36 students selected from all over India through a competitive selection process joining the Programme. The programme is run jointly by four departments: CSa, ECE, EE, and ESE. Mindtree has provided a gift grant with which a computational lab for M.Tech. students has been created in each of the four Departments. Each of these four labs has eight GPU based workstations which have proved to be valuable computational resources for the M.Tech. students.
