Meladath Joy Thomas

Assistant Professor

Bio

Joy Thomas completed his B.Tech. in Electrical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology (BHU), Varanasi and M. Sc.( Engg.) and Ph.D. in High Voltage Engg. from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. He has designed and built the country’s first Nuclear Electromagnetic Pulse( NEMP) simulator to simulate high altitude nuclear bursts and the Lightning test facility for studying the vulnerability of aircrafts to lightning strikes. He was involved in the design and extensive testing of lightning protection scheme for the Tejas (LCA) aircraft for both direct and indirect effects. He has developed pulsed power systems for the generation of high power microwaves, underwater acoustic pulse for deep sea profiling and other applications, Impulse Radiating Antenna(IRA) as a directed EM weapon as well as Railgun and Coilgun systems for EM launchers. He is presently working on detection of buried landmines using IRA and pulsed power systems for Electromagnetic manufacturing as well as solid state device based high voltage and high power pulsed power sources for various applications.

Expertise
